Spotlight on Julie Rose - Top 5 from Challenge 7

We thought it would be nice to have spotlight posts throughout the month dedicated to our top 5 from the last challenge "VINTAGE"  We hope you enjoy reading about their crafting journey and you never know it could be you in the spotlight next month.

I've always been interested in arts and crafts and have dabbled in many different things over the years, but have finally found my niche in card making.

I first started card making for my family and friends 3 years ago after it cost a small fortune to buy my Christmas cards from a well known high street store.  Naive of me I know, but I thought I could make my own cards for far less (little did I know that it would become a bit of an obsession and as crafters you know that it's like, there's always something else that we "need").

I really like the fact that each card is a little piece of artwork and to see the enjoyment that they bring to others is wonderful.  I wouldn't have missed it for the world to see how thrilled my niece was to have a birthday card with her name on it especially with the spelling of her name being so unusual.

I first saw Barbara Gray and Clarity stamp on Create and Craft, and was totally hooked when I saw her doing demonstrations at the NEC in November 2012.  Since then I've learnt so many new techniques and thoroughly enjoyed attending one of Barbara's workshops in August.

I look forward to the challenge each month and the chance of winning a £50 voucher to spend on more Clarity goodies.  I was so excited when I found out that my card and bookmark had been picked by the DT as one of the top 5, it's a real honour when the quality of the other entries was so high.

Being part of the challenge each month has inspired me to set up a blog (with a bit of help from my friends) and I love to see and share inspiration with all my crafting buddies both at Clarity and on facebook.

Julie's card and bookmark make the perfect all in one present for someone and of course the sketched lady is so elegant isn't she?

Spotlight on Hermina Speksnijder - Top 5 from Challenge 7

We thought it would be nice to have spotlight posts throughout the month dedicated to our top 5 from the last challenge "VINTAGE"  We hope you enjoy reading about their crafting journey and you never know it could be you in the spotlight next month.

Hello my name is Hermina Speksnijder, I'm 44 and live in Liverpool.

I've been 'into' art and crafts all my life but used to think stamping was just about colouring in someone else's designs. That was until I saw Barbara Gray on Create and Craft when she created a Tuscan landscape out of a couple of stamps, some ink and a brayer.

At first the price of the stamps put me off, then I saw the Nativity set for the classroom lesson 5 and decided even if they were expensive I would use them every Christmas.  After they arrived I could see their quality and soon bought more and decided to join the New Design Club as well.

I love the Clarity challenge as it inspires my mojo trying to think of something to fit the months theme rather than trying to make a last minute card for some ones birthday.  It was a lovely surprise to be picked for the top 5.

I used the Windmill and Reeds classroom set along with the insects from the Blooming Corner classroom set and of course some Clarity ducks.  The clock was cut with my Cameo and aged by embossing with a mixture of embossing powders and salt.

Vintage to me means the past or old so my entry for the challenge was inspired partly from walks along a canal with my Mother whilst my Grandfather tried to fix his canal boat and partly from visits to Amsterdam as a child.  The family houseboat was moored near a windmill and we used to watch the ducks swim past the windows.

We thought it would be nice to have spotlight posts throughout the month dedicated to our top 5 from the last challenge "VINTAGE"  We hope you enjoy reading about their crafting journey and you never know it could be you in the spotlight next month.

Originally from Edinburgh, I now live in the little valley town of Darvel in East Ayrshire.  I'm married with three grown up children and two cats.

I've been crafting now for over 6 years and started out making cards for family and friends.  This has progressed to selling them, along with other little makes, artwork and a few demos for the local Girl Guides.

I love to play about with all the things that are available today in the crafting world (big jump from computer generated clip art) but I have to confess that my favourite is stamping, especially with Clarity stamps.  They are so versatile and well made, I rave about them all the time.  I love watching Barbara Gray demonstrate and have managed to see her in Glasgow twice having got a piece of her work during a demo earlier this year which takes pride of place in my craft room.

I started a blog this year mainly due to the Clarity Stamp Challenge and I've enjoyed taking part and being in touch with other crafters.  My family can only take so much before their eyes mist over.  It's lovely to see what other people achieve and to feel a part of this community of such creative people.

I'm very very happy and honoured to have been picked in the Top 5 for this challenge as there were such a lot of lovely cards entered.  A big thank you to all the design team, hugs to all and happy crafting!

We thought it would be nice to have spotlight posts throughout the month dedicated to our top 5 from the last challenge "VINTAGE"  We hope you enjoy reading about their crafting journey and you never know it could be you in the spotlight next month.

My name's Julie Wheatman, I've lived in Scarborough all my life and work as a freelance book keeper.

I've crafted in various forms most of my life, but it wasn't until I discovered Create and Craft (it has a lot to answer for) in 2003 that my paper craft addiction started.  Like many others I've dabbled with different types of paper craft from iris folding to decoupage but have never really got into stamping until recently.

Stamping to me used to be just stamping an image and using embossing powders and glitters etc. but now, thanks to such excellent teachers like Barbara, I've found that it's not just about stamping, but about playing with inks and paints and other mediums too.  I'm loving it!

I'm now the proud owner of a gelli plate and yes I've used it and yes I am addicted!

Thanks again Barbara.

Spotlight on Linda Barton - Top 5 from Challenge 7

********

We thought it would be nice to have spotlight posts throughout the month dedicated to our top 5 from the last challenge "VINTAGE"  We hope you enjoy reading about their crafting journey and you never know it could be you in the spotlight next month.

Hello, my name's Linda and I'm a Clarity addict!

I've always been a bit crafty and resourceful I suppose.  I remember my earliest crafty make was born out of wanting a dog (read on, all will become much clearer!)  As I was the youngest of three children with both Mum and Dad working they didn't think the time was right for us to have a dog. So, undeterred I made myself a dog which was modelled on Dougal from the Magic Roundabout! Clarity fans of a certain age will remember Magic Roundabout; younger fans may need to Google it! Anyway my Dougal had long fur made of electric blue wool (what else?) and, so that I could take it a walk up and down the garden, I attached it to one of my roller skates, I made a lead and voila!  I had a dog that walked - sort of!  I was in my twenties at the time (only joking, I must have been 7 or 8).

When I was older I was given a tapestry kit for Christmas so I was hooked on that for a while.  I also loved sewing, making curtains, cushions and sometimes clothes.

I've always been interested in art, having absolutely no drawing or painting skills, but admiring others that have this talent and over the years have spent many a happy hour wandering around art galleries.

My love of Clarity stamps didn't take off straight away as I wasn't really a stamper.  I remember seeing Barbara on Create and Craft demo'ing a card with a ship, an anchor and a lighthouse.  I hadn't seen anything like it before and was amazed when she got her brayer out and a beam of light seemed to appear from nowhere on the card.  I loved the perspective of the ship coming towards you and the beam of light coming from the lighthouse against the dark sky.  That was art to me!  I still wasn't tempted to buy as I knew it was beyond me to achieve something like that.  I saw a few more demo's over the following months and heard Barbara say on one show that Clarity was based quite near Crowborough.  This just happened to be where my Dad came from and also where I'd spent many a happy summer and Christmas holiday, staying with grandparents who lived in that area.  I liked the idea of supporting a company that was local to where my lovely Day came from!  So, with that odd connection and the fact that there were no other stamp designs like Clarity, I took the plunge and bought the large peace stamp, Christmas window and miniatures set.

That was the start!  Since then, and over time, I've gone through quite a bit of copier paper and card, but I've learnt so much about stamping and art techniques (colouring, shading, dimension, perspective etc) particularly from Barbara's TV shows and especially with the classroom shows.  I love the quality and design of Clarity stamps and really like the fact that some of the designs are in different sizes so that you can get perspective if you are picture building.  I'm in the New Design Club and have been slowly building up my collection of stamps over the last couple of years.  I would also say, without a doubt, joining in the challenges and sending in homework has helped me, as I find that 'doing it' is really the best way to learn.  The mistakes you make, the paper and card you screw up and throw away is all part of the fun!

Today Barbara was joined in the classroom by Martyn Parker who admitted that he had never crafted before and he was looking rather nervous wasn't he?

Here's a reminder of the materials used in the first lesson:

Lesson 20 (part 2)

Barbara soon got to work and taught Martyn a few tricks and before he knew it he had completed his first project which was the winter wonderland within the jigsaw stamp.  I think we were all amazed with the finished artwork including Martyn, he was as pleased as punch!

Here's the first set of stamps used for this project:
